Skopelos is the greenest island in Greece. Here the green of the pine trees and the dense forest mix with the deep blue of the sea and sky creating the picture of unrivaled natural beauty. The island of Skopelos is characterized by its dense forests and this is why it was formally declared a green and blue island on 5/5/97 by the international organization of Biopolitics.
It is characteristic that the largest part of the island (more than 67%) is covered by a virgin pine forest. It is amazing forest that will attract your attention.
The town of Skopelos is also wonderful. It has also been characterized as a traditional settlement. Its architecture is a mix of various architectural rhythms. It is built amphitheater and it is beautiful and imposing. Every step through the small streets of the town creates pleasant images. You can relax in one of the charming coffee bars in town or try delicious Greek cuisine in a restaurant over the sea. The view is magical.
On the other side of the island is Glossa. It is a lovely mountain village of approximately 1000 inhabitants. It is very traditional, with cute houses within the narrow street that combines yesterday with today. You can see the sea from almost all the sides of the village.
About 3 km from Glossa is the little port Loutraki. It is a small charming fishing village with tavernas and coffee bars to enjoy the calmness of the sea.
Skopelos has beautiful beaches with clear crystal water. Pine trees are above the coast and offer to visitors an unforgettable experience in nature. There are several organized beaches as Stafylos, Milia, Agnontas, Panormos, Kastani, Hovolo and Agios Konstantinos but there are also pristine beaches as Velanio, Perivoliou, Hondrogiorgi and Armenopetra.
Other picturesque settlements in Skopelos are Palio Klima and Elios. They are two beautiful villages in next to each other just above the sea.
A place that is worth to visit is the chapel of St. John in the Kastri just outside of Glossa. It is a small church built on a huge rock in the sea. The landscape is breathtaking and has a wild beauty. There are also many traditional monasteries in Skopelos.
On the island you can enjoy various types of tourism . For those who love nature , the scenery is amazing and they can walk inside the mountain and explore the forest. The island has a wide range of flowers, trees and shrubs. The local vegetation is chiefly made up of forests of Aleppo pines , Kermes Oaks, a small forest of Holm Oaks, fruit trees and olive groves. The island’s history is long and interesting. The myths and legends with gods, semi gods, mythical kings, dragons, saints and pirates make the island magical and mysterious. The ancient name of the island was Peparithos. Peparithos was the son of Ariadne and Dionysus and grandson of Minos, the king of Crete. The Peparithos’ wine was very prestigious and famous in ancient times. From the fourth century, bishop of the island was St. Riginos who is the patron saint of the island.
It is very easy to go to Skopelos. There are daily connections to ports of Volos, Agios Konstantinos and Mantoudi in summer and winter by boats and speedboats. It has two ports, one in Skopelos town and one in Loutraki. There is no airport in Skopelos but there is airport on the neighboring island of Skiathos wich is 30 minutes by boat from Skopelos.
